ADRIAN: Designing Hollywood, Dressing America

This fall, the ASU FIDM Museum shines a spotlight on Hollywood’s Golden Age design visionary Gilbert Adrian (1903–1959), the costume designer whose glamour helped define an era. In the 1930s, his creations captivated moviegoers around the world, offering Depression-era audiences a dazzling escape into fashion fantasy. “Gowns by Adrian” became a celebrated calling card, synonymous with cinematic style and sophistication. 

He helped transform Joan Crawford into a fashion icon, draped Jean Harlow in slinky bias-cut glamour, and designed costumes for more than 200 productions, including "The Wizard of Oz."

In 1942, Adrian brought Hollywood glamour directly to American women when he opened his couture salon on Wilshire Boulevard, later expanding his influence through fashion sold by major retailers nationwide. His razor-sharp tailoring, dramatic silhouettes, and unmistakable flair continue to inspire designers today.

This tribute to a true fashion maverick will feature more than 50 rare ensembles and accessories from the Museum’s collection, along with loans from generous private collectors. ADRIAN: Designing Hollywood, Dressing America celebrates the enduring legacy of a designer who shaped both the silver screen and American style.

  • Location: FIDM is located at 919 S Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90015.
  • Parking: Parking is available for $10 cash in the lot located underneath the FIDM building; entrance is on 9th Street just before Grand Avenue. Please do not enter if the red Lot Full sign is posted at the entrance. Additional parking can be found in surrounding lots and street meters.
  • Cost: The exhibit is Free. Donations are gratefully accepted in the lobby.
  • Food: There is no food allowed in the exhibit, but we may find a place for lunch (or even do a bit of shopping) in the neighborhood after the exhibit.
  • Event Length: The exhibit takes about an hour or less. Kevin may have lots to say, however, so prepare for more!
