Vintage Ribbon Work and Trimmings
Nineteenth century clothing abounded with glorious detailing created using fine fabric, ribbons, and trim. Learn to recreate several of these glorious trimmings in this hand-on workshop via Zoom. Serpentine gathering, pleating variations, figure 8 rosette and more will be included. Once you have made your samples with us, you will be ready to apply these techniques to historical costumes, especially the 1830s through 1890’s.
Materials List - Tools:
- Scissors (All purpose, or one pair for ribbon/fabric and another pair for wire-edged ribbon)
- Milliners’ needles
- Heavy thread (buttonhole or quilting in a neutral color such as khaki or grey)
- Regular thread, one light neutral and one dark
- 3” aluminum hair clips (not barrettes. Often called duck clips)
- Tape measure or small ruler or both
- Chalk marker or chalk pencil or fabric marking pen
- Notebook and pen or pencil
- Several small pieces of cardboard like you get in a package of bias tape
Materials List - Supplies:
Avoid papery florist ribbon and polyester satin ribbon. Other polyester ribbons are fine. Also look for stripes, plaids, polka dots, taffeta and sheers.
- 2 pieces of crinoline approx. 4” by 4” and a strip approx. 1 1/2” wide by 5”-8” long
- 4 yards of 1” to 1 1/2” wide ribbon (we will use in one 36” piece and four 24” pieces so they can be five different ribbons or all the same)
- 2 1/2 yards 1” wide ribbon
- 1 yd of 1 ½” wide grosgrain (can be in two 18” pieces)
- 18”-28” of 1”-2” wide ribbon (can be wired)
- 12”-18” of 1 ½”-2” wide velvet ribbon (if unavailable, any ribbon can be used)
- 8 small beads (make sure you have a threaded needle that can go thru these beads)
