Mottainai: Japanese Mending through History

with Laura Wong

Saturday, June 7th

3 - 4 PM PDT

Visible MendingThis workshop will provide a brief introduction to the history of Japanese textile mending utilizing real antique textiles from Japan as examples. We begin with a discussion of the history of textiles in Japan, including various Japanese textile terms such as boro, sashiko, and indigo (aizome) as well as the various techniques used traditionally to mend and reinforce cloth. After the lecture on Japanese textile history I will
demonstrate some more contemporary mending techniques which utilize traditional materials and tools such as sashiko thread and a palm thimble. Students are welcome to follow along and try the mending techniques themselves or just observe.
The Zoom link will be emailed on 6/6/25.
