Join me to create a fabulous 20’s dress in less time than it takes to learn the Charleston! In the early 1920a, Mary Brooks Picken created a method to make “a smart, up-to-the-minute dress, cut out, completely made, all ready to put on within an hour!”. While I am sure she could make one of these dresses in an hour (after making many of them) it does take a little longer on your first try. That is why this is a two day workshop! I will start with a short history of the one hour dresses, guide you through the method of measuring, cutting and sewing this dress as well as show you some of the many design variations that are possible. With practice, maybe you too can make this dress in one hour!

Supplies (student provided) needed for the workshop:

  • 2-5 yards of fabric, the amount you need depends on your height, your build and the width of your fabric. ***Teacher note: I suggest starting with a cotton or cotton blend fabric for your first attempt at this dress, but a rayon, chiffon, thin satin, thin wool, or even velvet would be appropriate.  If one width of the fabric goes all the way around at your hips with 6-8 extra inches, you will need one length from your shoulder to however long you want the dress, plus 4-6 inches for hem.  This usually works for a 54/60” fabric. If you are thin it could work for 45” fabrics as well.   If the fabric does not go all the way around you with extra at the hip, you will need two lengths plus 4-6” for the hem.

  • 1 pk double fold bias tape or enough extra fabric/contrast fabric to make bias binding if you want to.
  • Measuring tape
  • Paper and pencil
  • Calculator
  • Basic sewing tools

Optional pattern (student provided):

  • The One Hour Dress by Mary Brooks Picken (there are three versions), available on Amazon
  • The One Hour Dress by Mrs. Depew, available on mrsdepew.com
